Tree Removal on Home Ground in Stevensburg, VA

Stevensburg sits on Route 3 in Culpeper County, Virginia, 6.8 road miles and 12 minutes east of Culpeper. Garrett grew up on a cattle farm just outside it. Quakers called it York until 1782, when it was renamed for General Edward Stevens. The brick Georgian manor Salubria, from around 1742, still stands nearby, and Hansbrough's Ridge a mile east held the Union Army's winter camp of 1863 to 1864.

The land is rolling cattle and hay farms on clay over rock, with board fences, big white oaks and walnuts by the farmhouses, poplar in the draws, and cedar in any ungrazed pasture. A limb on a fence here is usually a same-day look; someone on the crew is already passing by.

Why a Culpeper Crew Comes to Stevensburg

What Stevensburg Gets With Us

The Owner's Home Road

Garrett drives Route 3 through Stevensburg most days of his life. A call from here gets answered by someone who knows which farm you mean, and an estimate is usually booked within a couple of days.

Farmhouse Walnuts and White Oaks

The black walnuts and white oaks planted around the old houses are two centuries old in places. We take the dead wood and the limbs over the roof first, and we only recommend removal when the trunk or roots have actually failed.

Redcedar in the Pasture

Once cattle come off a field, eastern redcedar fills it in a few years. Luis brings the skid steer and mulcher for cedar-choked pasture, and the fence line comes back clean.

Unincorporated, County Code

Stevensburg has no town government, so Culpeper County's rules apply. A tree on your own land is your call; clearing over 10,000 square feet needs a county land-disturbing permit, and farm clearing is exempt.

What Stevensburg Homeowners Ask

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Stevensburg?

No. Stevensburg is unincorporated, so the Culpeper County Code applies, and it has no permit for a private tree. Paperwork starts with clearing: 10,000 square feet, or any size in a floodplain, on a 15 percent slope, in a wetland or in the Lake Pelham and Mountain Run Lake watershed. Spring brush piles fall under the 4 PM Burning Law. More in our permits guide.
