Sperryville is a village of about 300 people in western Rappahannock County, Virginia, 19.3 road miles and 30 minutes west of Culpeper on US-211, below the Thornton Gap entrance to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. At about 700 feet, its two main streets follow the two branches of the Thornton River. Francis Thornton Jr. began selling lots in 1820 on land King George II granted his family in 1731, and the historic district was listed in 1983.

This is mountain-edge work: steep lots, chestnut oaks and hickories in rock, tall hollow poplars, river sycamores, and white pines topped by ridge wind. Ice comes here first. It is our western edge, on the same terms as Culpeper.
