Brandy Station, VA: Tree Work on Battlefield Ground

Brandy Station is a community of about 190 people in Culpeper County, Virginia, 6.6 road miles and 11 minutes northeast of Culpeper on US-29 and the Norfolk Southern line. On June 9, 1863, more than 20,000 soldiers fought the largest mostly-cavalry battle of the Civil War across Fleetwood Hill and around St. James Church. The Graffiti House, built about 1858, still shows their inscriptions, and the name is said to come from a tavern sign for brandy.

Today it is pasture and hay ground on red clay: white oaks and hickories in the old fence lines, pine and redcedar on the field edges, dead ash in every hedgerow. It is our first stop heading north, so storm calls here get seen early.

Why a Culpeper Crew Comes to Brandy Station

What Brandy Station Gets With Us

Eleven Minutes Up US-29

Heading north, Brandy Station is our first stop, so a limb on a roof or a split oak over the drive is usually seen that morning, before the truck rolls on to Remington or Bealeton.

Fence-Line Oaks in Open Pasture

Lone white oaks and hickories in the hay fields catch summer storm wind with nothing to block it. Dead limbs and split leaders come out first, and we say so when an old field oak is still sound.

Battlefield Ground, Careful Access

Much of the land around Fleetwood Hill is preserved or farmed. Our chipper and truck stay on the drive or gravel, never across a field, and the ground is left as we found it.

County Rules, No Town Permit

Brandy Station is unincorporated, so the county code applies. Your own tree is your call; for clearing near a floodplain or past 10,000 square feet, we ask the county planning office first.

What Brandy Station Homeowners Ask

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Brandy Station?

No. Brandy Station is unincorporated, so the Culpeper County Code applies, and it has no permit for a private tree. Paperwork starts with clearing: 10,000 square feet, or any size in a floodplain, on a 15 percent slope, in a wetland or in the Lake Pelham and Mountain Run Lake watershed. Spring brush piles fall under the 4 PM Burning Law. More in our permits guide.
