Garrett Poole was raised on a cattle farm near Stevensburg and spent five seasons on storm-cleanup and line-clearance crews before starting Piedmont Tree Care Co. in 2017. That is why every job starts with rigging, comes down in sections, and gets a written price before it goes on the calendar.
Culpeper's big trees are white and red oaks, some older than the 1874 courthouse, with tulip poplar in the stream bottoms and sycamore along the rivers. Red clay that is sticky in March and rock-hard in August changes how roots hold, and the emerald ash borer has taken most of the local ash.
