Lignum is a Route 3 community in eastern Culpeper County, Virginia, 11.4 road miles and 18 minutes from Culpeper, on high farm ground between the Rapidan and the Rappahannock. It sits at about 404 feet, and its post office has run since November 14, 1877.

This is the quiet end of the county: hay and cattle pasture, ridges of white oak, red oak and hickory, and Rapidan-draining bottoms where sycamore and red maple grow big. Old field edges have gone to pine and redcedar, with dead ash in the hedgerows. Lots are larger here, so fence rows and field edges are as common as yard trees. We pass through most weeks on the Route 3 run.
