Rixeyville lies on Route 229 in Culpeper County, Virginia, 7.6 road miles and 13 minutes north of Culpeper, at about 446 feet. The Rixey family held plantations here before the Civil War, the post office opened February 16, 1818, and John Franklin Rixey served the district in Congress from 1897 to 1907.
The land rolls harder toward the Hazel River, which runs on to the Rappahannock near Remington. Ridges carry chestnut and white oak on thin, rocky soil, creek bottoms grow sycamore and red maple, and old white pine and Leyland screens on the horse farms are now tall enough to fail in ice. Route 229 is our road to Jeffersonton, so we pass through several days a week.
