On August 9, 1862, Stonewall Jackson turned back Nathaniel Banks along Cedar Run at nearby Cedar Mountain, and by 2023 the American Battlefield Trust and partners had saved 629 acres of that ground.

The rest is pasture, hay and wooded bottoms: sycamore and red maple on Cedar Run, lone white oaks and hickories in the fields, dead ash on every fence. Low ground here stays wet after storms, so we plan the truck's path before it leaves the gravel.
